Up to 1971 the department of Electronics in the Institute, was a minor activity, looking after electronics subjects mostly basic in nature and compulsory for the diploma and degree students of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the subsidiary levels. It was in the year 1971 that the course “ Diploma in Industrial Electronics” was introduced in this Institute, first time in the state of Maharashtra. Since its inception this course has been at the focus of attraction of the meritorious students from this area seeking admission to Diploma in Engineering. During subsequent years, the faculty and the infra structural facilities started growing up and a full fledged Department of Electronics came into existence by 1975, under the auspicious leadership of Prof N.R.Phadnis. It was out of his wisdom, enthusiasm and the expertise provided by the faculty of this department, an undergraduate course in Electrical Engineering with specialisation in Electronics was started in 1979 , affiliated to Shivaji University ,Kolhapur. This course soon became popular amongst the student community and was very well accepted by the industry. The composite nature of the department continued till 1980. In 1980, the faculty of the department was bifurcated and a separate polytechnic department of Electronics came into being, with Mr. H. K. Abhyankar as its first Head of the Department. Mr. M. S. Vader, the existing H.O.D. took over the responsibility since the year 1989.
An under graduate course in Electronics was sanctioned and started in 1986 .
